We Say: Having never used a waterbourne Oil before, I was a little sceptical on the possibilities of this new type of system, I spoke at length with the head guys at Blanchon and was very well advised on application method and drying times etc. I was also told not to worry about the patchiness that the first two coats would leave as the final coat brings the whole thing together if applied correctly.
We set about our road test, sanding 40 m2 of really wide open grained Ash plank flooring, finishing with a trio orbital sander at 120 grit, we were soon prepped for this beautiful floor to receive it's first coat of Oil, we used a short haired roller to work in the watery oil over the entire area, making sure not to leave any heavy deposits on the floor, After just over an hour the floor was touch dry and ready to receive it's next coat, there was quite a bit of grain raise but we was told to de-nib only on the second coat, so that's what we did.
The second coat took slightly longer to dry and needed machine de-nibbing, due to excessive grain raise, once this was done and the floor was nice and smooth again, we was ready to apply the final coat, I must admit we started thinking maybe we were going to need to apply four.
Third coat applied we waited a couple of hours to check the results.
Just as we was told by Blanchon, there was no patchiness, minimal enhancement and a great looking matt finish, we are impressed!
This product is great and completely environmentally friendly, 5 ltrs will cover upto 25m2 with 3 coats, oil application really doesn't come any easier or quicker, an hour in between coats is slightly ambitious and you still get grain raise, obviously due to the water, but overall a very nice oiled finish can be achieved from 3 thin coats with a short haired roller.
